Active-duty Service members and eligible Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees traveling on Temporary Duty (TDY) may be eligible for reimbursement of certain expenses related to transporting expressed breast milk.

 

Under the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR), transportation of human breast milk expressed during TDY travel may qualify as a reimbursable travel accommodation for a special need.

Reimbursement eligibility may apply if:

 

• Your TDY assignment is longer than three calendar days
• Your travel occurs within 12 months of giving birth
• Expenses are authorized in advance on your travel authorization
• You retain receipts and submit them with your travel voucher
• Reimbursement is approved by your command or agency (up to applicable limits)

Depending on your approved travel authorization, reimbursable expenses may include:

 

• Breast milk shipping and transportation services

• Insulated shipping containers or coolers

• Refrigerants such as dry ice or gel packs

• Other approved transportation-related expenses needed to safely transport expressed breast milk
